I Love This City's Festival Tasteful

When I first heard that the inaugural I Love This City festival was moved from AT&T Park to Mountain View’s Shoreline Amphitheater, I thought fate (or Live Nation) was twisting my arm.
The last time I visited Shoreline was a decade ago, when Moby headlined a nationwide tour and invited top electronic DJs to spin. One of the side stage’s top acts was a Dutch mixer taking Europe by storm: Tiësto. It was the first electronic music show I ever attended.

More than 10 years later at I Love This City, Tiësto was one of the main stage headliners and I'm pushing the age when attending an event that allows high school sophomores is questionable at best. But I was actually eager to attend ILTC. For one thing, the event promised, at the very least, a lineup chock full of well-known talent, ranging from Steve Aoki to DFA co-founder James Murphy to Man-of-the-Moment David Guetta, voted number one in DJ Magazine's annual Top 100 List in 2011.
In full disclosure, my sentimental side was pulling for success for this inaugural event, just to soak in my trance-filled Tiësto nostalgia. Venue change and all, Live Nation did a pretty good job of holding things together. Here's a rundown:

The Good
David Guetta: The man knows how to work a crowd, and he had to. He had to follow Tiësto, an unenviable task given the Dutch DJ's enduring popularity. But Guetta won over listeners with his infectious grin and antics, which included dancing on the DJ equipment table and gesturing to the crowd like a conductor guides a symphony.

Crystal Method: On the Bass Stage, Los Angeles duo Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan threw down a storming set of big beats that was only derailed by technical glitches at the very end. Kirkland was jamming buttons and strumming strings on an original and fascinating contraption, a CD turntable and a mini-keyborard fused to two guitar necks.

The Visuals: Whoever handled visuals for the main stage DJs did a tremendous job. In fact, the graphics were so stunning, I couldn't help but wonder if the headliners had their playlists prepared in order to sync up with the montages. Regardless, the production crews should be lauded for tasteful use of confetti, fog, and lighting to lend some extra oomph to the shows. The side stages also had elaborate lighting and visual setups.

The Swaps: Transitions between sets were grab-a-beer-go-to-the-bathroom short. The production teams were well-oiled machines, setting up gear and visuals.
Shoreline was a success: The amphitheater ended up being a fantastic scene for the headliners. The effect gave a truly condensed focus on the DJ, something that might have been lacking at AT&T Park. The folks on the grass had a view and still has reams of bass blasting from the speakers. And the seats gave a much needed reprieve from concert goers, who wanted to take in music and crowd.
Food Trucks: An extremely welcome addition, though they were placed between the side stages, out of the way of the concession stands flanking the amphitheater. Thankfully, the food trucks didn't seem too inclined to mark up the prices of their own offerings

The Bad
Where was the afterparty? The one big drawback with relocating ILTC to Shoreline was the surrounding neighborhood. Once Guetta finished his set and cooed to the restless crowd that he could not play any more music, Mountain View became Bay Area electronic music limbo just before midnight, caught between San Francisco and San Jose. If only nearby Google headquarters had been open, surely the search engine conglomerate could have thrown a kick-ass shindig.
Three stages: There was an impressive collection of talent to be had at ILTF. The Bass Stage made a lot of sense, a refuge where concert-goers could get their fill of low-end frequencies and throbbing drums. But some very good electronic artists got kind of lost in the fray at the Park Stage, which seemed like it was the everything-but-trance-and-dubstep venue. James Murphy, Holy Fuck, Apparat, and Cut Chemist all got shoehorned into an area that struggled to draw a significant following simply because of the size of the other two stages. A main stage and a strong alternate stage likely would have been sufficient.

The nickle-and-dime: $15 to park. $10 for a beer. $4.50 for bottled water. This after $60 for one-day tickets or $100 for two-days. And that's without any, shall we say, "extracurricular activities." Today's electronic festival-goer seems like they have to be more part of the 1% than the 99%.
Gotye's ubiquity: No fewer than three main stage headliners threw in a redo of "Somebody That I Used to Know" and the crowd went absolutely crazy, shouting "You didn't have to stoop so low" every time. C'mon DJs! You didn’t have to milk the crowd so much.

Headliners referring to the crowd as "San Francisco". I know Tiesto, Afrojack, and David Guetta are all from Europe, but it was kind of awkward when pretty much everyone kept saying "San Francisco!" when the city was a 40-minute drive away. Then again, if the 49ers move to Santa Clara, I guess anything in between can fall under the San Francisco title.

Detroit's Electronic Music Festival Brings Scores Of After-hours Events

As music fans in the city look forward to Movement, Detroit's electronic music festival, we'd like to offer some classic advice from R & B crooner R. Kelly to keep in mind as you plan your weekend: "After the show it's the after party."
After parties are one of the best traditions of Movement, electronic music festival that will take over Hart Plaza for its 13th year this Memorial Day weekend. After the shows ends each night, Detroit's normal 2 a.m. bar closing time gets shoved aside at parties that won't shut down until dawn.
Whether you're looking to hear an act that didn't make it into the official lineup or just want to keep dancing, musicians, bars and promoters sponsor events all around the city. Below, we've highlighted some of our top choices, but fortunately, there's a dozen more to choose from. With attendance expected to be more than 100,000 over the three-day Movement festival, the city's clubs and bars are sure to be jam-packed.

'Deadmau5 Day' Declared in Las Vegas

Mayor Carolyn Goodman officially proclaimed Jan. 2, 2012 "deadmau5 Day" in the city of Las Vegas on Wednesday. The date marks the launch of an exclusive partnership between Wynn Las Vegas and the electro/house DJ from Canada. Deadmau5 will play at both Encore Beach Club and XS through 2012.

Jesse Waits, co-owner and managing partner of XS and Tryst nightclubs, agreed that this recognition of Deadmau5 had to do with the masses journeying to the city of sin not only for gambling, but also for electronic music. In a statement he explained, "the following for deadmau5 is phenomenal, and I applaud Mayor Goodman for recognizing both his remarkable persona alongside his ability to drive visitor traffic from fans traveling across the globe to experience his live sets."

Deadmau5 was recently nominated for three Grammy Awards. His LP "4x4=12" -- which peaked at No. 47 on the Billboard 200 and sold 243,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan - was nominated in the best Dance/Electronica Album category and "Raise Your Weapon" is recognized for Best Dance Recording. His remix of Foo Fighters' "Rope" brings in his third nomination in the Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical category.

"Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world and deadmau5 represents the cream of the crop in electronic dance music, the hottest genre of music that has made an significant positive financial impact to the city this past year," said Sean Christie, co-owner and managing partner of Encore Beach Club and Surrender Nightclub, in a statement. "Mayor Goodman's proclamation of 'deadmau5 Day' is an important symbolic acknowledgement of this wildly popular entertainment form that has come to define the best in Las Vegas nightlife."

ALL ABOUT CHUCKIE

Having risen to fame with chart successes such as ‘Let The Bass Kick’ and ‘Aftershock,’ Chuckie’s career has continued to develop thus turning him into a global phenomenon who never fails to win over legions of fans with his upfront approach to making and playing music. Taking dance and urban music by storm in Europe, The United States, and South America and beyond, he is spreading the Chuckie flavour with his explosive beats, surprise FXs and adulated climaxes. Although Amsterdam based, this truly international DJ and producer works tirelessly to fit everything into his hectic schedule whether he’s on a plane or in a hotel room as he travels the globe performing to millions of fans in the world’s best clubs.
Born in South America’s Suriname as Clyde Sergio Narain, Chuckie later moved to The Netherlands where his passion for hip-hop and electronic music grew and eventually manifested itself in his decision to become a DJ and producer. His energetic mixing skills coupled with his ability to effortlessly cross over into various different musical styles and his understanding of how to work a crowd has made Chuckie one of the most in demand DJs in the world. A strong purveyor of Amsterdam’s ‘dirty house’ sound, Chuckie has helped spread the sound of the city to the global dance scene, marking Amsterdam as an important player in this global industry. His own ‘Dirty Dutch’ club concept has evolved over the years from a solid urban event for 6,000 people into a massive house music night for 30,000 people and now even consistently sells out Amsterdam’s RAI stadium in record time.
Chuckie’s touring schedule is as relentless as it is impressive. Playing headline sets at the world’s premier clubs, Chuckie regularly touches down in a different country each day, skipping across the continents to enthral fans at the most famous events in the world. In addition to his residency for the large-scale Sensation events in Europe, Chuckie also holds three residencies in the USA where he travels to each and every month to play LAVO in New York, Marquee in Las Vegas and LIV in Miami. The ‘Mix King’ is also a regular at festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, SxSW in Texas, Fuji Rock in Japan, Creamfields in Australia, Electric Zoo and EDC not to mention his countless other gigs he plays around the globe in cities such as London, Buenos Aires, Belgrade, Montreal and Stockholm.
Chuckie also brings the raucous to the White Isle each summer as the world’s electronic music fans flock to the clubbing capital of the world, Ibiza. Summer 2011 has seen Chuckie become the new resident for Eric Morillo’s esteemed Subliminal nights at Pacha. Playing five dates across the season, Chuckie has been accepted into the Subliminal family with whom he will collaborate at the Subliminal – Dirty Dutch Invasion Pacha Parties and Café Mambo. During Wednesday’s his record label Dirty Dutch Records brings the heat to Blue Marlin at Cala Jondal for the conoscenti of the island to come and enjoy the sunshine and beats provided by himself and his label cohorts.
After winning MOBO awards in both 2004 and 2005, Chuckie has proven to be a prolific hit maker in the studio too with a steady back catalogue of highly successful singles and remixes ever since. 2009’s ‘Let The Bass Kick’ became the anthem of that summer and eventually went on to reach no.9 in the UK singles chart, catapulting him into the global consciousness. Since then tracks like ‘Aftershock’ and ‘Move it2 The Drum’ with Hardwell have continued to enhance the reputation of this enthusiastic and dedicated producer. A constantly requested remixer, Chuckie has reworked the likes of David Guetta and Bob Sinclair before adding official remixes for P Diddy’s Dirty Diddy Money and Michael Jackson to his resume. Indeed Chuckie was the only person asked to do the official remix for the King Of Pop’s ‘Hollywood Tonight’ in March 2011, a dream come true for the charismatic Dutchman. For his latest remixes, Chuckie has brought his no nonsense approach to The Saturday’s ‘ Notorious’ and Eric Morillo’s ‘Stronger.’
Having landed a multi album artist deal with Atlantic Records in the USA, Chuckie has spent the latter part of 2010 and on into 2011 working on his own material in the studio alongside megastars such as of T-Pain, Tinie Tempah, Kesha, Alexis Jordan, P Diddy, 50 Cent, Lil Jon, and Akon.
If all of this was not enough, 2011 has also seen Chuckie join the BBC Radio 1 team to present his ‘In New DJs We Trust’ show. Aired every month, Chuckie gets to spins to a huge world-wide audience and show off his undoubted talent behind the decks which has also seen him receive the coveted TMF “Best Dance DJ” award where he beat off competition from the likes of Dutch heavyweights Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren. As his stock continues to rise and rise, it seems the era of Chuckie domination is only just beginning!!

Tiesto's Top Ten Venues In The World Number 10

#10 Hordern Pavilion, Sydney

“One of Australia’s most famous concert halls, the Hordern Pavilion blows my mind every time I play there. Australians are certainly in the front of the race for world’s most energetic party-goers and it shows when you get behind the decks in front of nearly 10,000 of them all screaming their heads off for each song you play. The venue itself is amazing and it allows for all the great production I bring to my shows, but at the end of the day what sets this venue apart is the unending energy of the fans inside.”

Electric Daisy Carnival NY Huge Success

With 100,000 people over three days at the inaugural Electric Daisy Carnival New York, it can officially be called a massive success. A sold out MetLife stadium May 18th – 20th provided New Jersey an experience like none has ever seen before. The festival featured state of the art lighting, stunning special effects and the best talent the industry has to offer, as well as hundreds of theatrical performances. With three stages of music, Insomniac gave what it promised to deliver, an unforgettable experience unlike any other.
At around 3 o’clock in the afternoon, the MetLife stadium filled up with fluorescent clothes, flowers and fake fur leggings as Friday kicked off with beautiful weather. The usual heavy hitters like ARMIN VAN BUUREN, MADEON and FEDDE LE GRAND, all put on terrific performances. Friday was filled with energy and had people shouting along their favorite songs while dancing long into the night.
Saturday, I got bits and pieces of all 31 sets, which were running continuously from noon till 11 o’clock at night. The overwhelming majority of Saturday’s acts however, along with the rest of the festival’s lineup, were house and trance sets and the only thing that really seemed to be missing, was a stage with all the up-and-coming artists. With “Titanium” by DAVID GUETTA featuring SIA, “Coming Home” by DIDDY-Dirty Money featuring SKYLAR GREY, and ADELE’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” all were heard multiple times over the weekend. Saturday did however bring the most refreshing sound, as artists like CARL COX reminded me how easily it is to stand out by doing something different. Even SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA’s STEVE ANGELLO stepped away from his usual house heavy sets to a stretch of fresh and increasingly rhythm-happy dance music. ERICK MORILLO had a memorable performance by deviating from his usual house routine and had instead put on a dancehall-tinged Caribbean inspired set. Still the main attractions of day were AVICII and CALVIN HARRIS, playing all of their popular tunes that had people screaming at the top of their lungs while sending the entire crowd into a dancing flash mob

Sunday was taken over by the Dutch DJ superstars, QUINTINO, R3HAB, CHUCKIE and AFROJACK, who closed EDC New York with a bang. R3HAB performed a great set that had the crowd in the entire stadium jumping up and down while he played his hottest tracks. AFROJACK was the highlight of Sunday performances, putting on two shows and closing the weekend in front of a huge crowd that went as far back as the stadium gates. As the night ended, AFROJACK thanked the crowd and his fellow performers as the final fireworks lit up the sky, claiming his love for New York and made a promise to return to EDC New York again in 2013.

HeadHunterz

Style: Hardstyle
Best known for: Stage presence, breaking boundaries, melody
Tune of 2011: Brennan Heart & The Prophet 'Wake Up (Snooze Edit)'
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2011: Ran-D
What's the future of DJing? Breaking down the barriers of genres
Favourite app? Facebook brought me and my fans much closer together. It's great getting so much feedback. I feel less alone while travelling!
Discovery of the year? I thought there was no life after Lost, but Dexter saved my life.
Rediscovery of the year? My 2008 track 'Megasound'. That did really well on this tour, while in Europe it was never one of my biggest hits.
Awkward Moment? A hater who kept screaming 'Sonny Moore' at me. Dude, I love Sonny Moore too
Style or substance? Substance. I hope styles will start to blend more. Styles are invisible walls, creative limits.
Pet Hate? Trolling my Facebook page, feeding on negativity. I just don't get why they don't put their energy into finding something they do like. There is so much music to choose from, nobody is forcing you to listen to anything.
Water and plug sockets. Chilli sauce and blowjobs. Certain things should always be kept apart. Including hardstyle and dubstep, you'd think. Unless you're Headhunterz aka Willem Rebergen, who has been fusing them into 'dubstyle' since 2010's collaboration with Brennan Heart 'The MF Point Of Perfection'.
“Dubstep is a lot about sound design, and so is hardstyle,” the Dutchman claims. “It gave me inspiration for my latest track 'Doomed' and you can expect more of that on my upcoming album.”

Headhunterz' recent single 'The Message Is Hardstyle' showed he's still a dab hand at the aggro bangers his hardstyle fans adore, however - particularly those who have flocked to see him on his first American tour.
“People in the States come to hear my own tunes,” he says. “A year ago, we could not have imagined doing an 18-city North American tour. A lot of work is still to be done here, but the hardstyle scene is growing fast.source dj mag

Electric Daisy Carnival Day 1 at the Meadowlands

The MetLife Stadium parking lot is rocking with relentless whipcrack beats as the techno fest Electric Daisy Carnival has begun. The touring electronic dance music party is going to be in residence at the Meadowlands all weekend. Thousands of fans are grooving on concrete, jumping and fist pumping to a screaming soundtrack of zaps, bleeps and distorted vocals. Folks in alien and animal costumes are ricocheting between three stages under a searing sun.

Some are strutting in skimpy disco shorts, bikini tops, rabbit ears and little else, blissfully ignoring announcements that caution against wearing outfits that are too revealing. So far, the scene has been pretty wholesome — in contrast with the fears that Electric Daisy would be a riotous bacchanal. Concertgoers are peacefully coexisting, so far, in a fantastical realm of color, sound and gesture.
The dance beats are frenzied and violent but the crowd is mellow and well behaved, excluding a few rowdy groups of tailgating fans playing beer pong.
State troopers are circling the site in pale blue uniforms that stand out amid a sea of shiny, furry fashions. The performers are all but invisible on stage, surrounded by towering video screens awash in psychedelic colors. People aren't looking at the stage. They're looking at each other, as hips swish on cue. Most songs build to a crescendo of skittering rhythms followed by a tiny pause. When the beat crashes back, it's the techno answer to a guitar solo.
Between the musical alchemists on stage and the tutu-clad marathon dancers in the crowd, this is not your father's rock concert.
With the rumbling bass and the shrieking voices, it sounds as if the world is about the split in two. The clothes get wilder while the sun sinks. Young women in sheer dresses and fluffy boots flutter in like post-apocalyptic disco queens, accompanied by men wearing lawn and leaf bags as improvised superhero capes.
By hour three, the dance anthems starts sounding same-y but the exuberance of the crowd intensifies, creating the sense of unity that fans seek at Phish shows. Electronic dance music (EDM) isn't fueled by adventurous instrumentation, however. It has a certain primal appeal in a live setting. For all its future shock flourishes, the genre conveys raw power that connects humans. by lisa rose

Interview With TIESTO

How do you feel that DJing and producing has changed over the last few years?
Technology has completely changed producing tracks and has made it much easier especially for collaborations. I can put together part of a track, send it over to someone to take a look at, they can add to it and send it back to me, and this can all be done almost instantly. I can also produce wherever I am in the world, which makes the balance of making music and touring a lot easier than ever. DJing has also changed a huge amount due to technology. You are no longer restricted by vinyl in the same way. It gives DJs more of an opportunity than ever to really create a sound that is distinctly theirs.

What was your favourite memory of 2011 and what do you have planned for 2012?

Ending my college tour making history at the Home Depot Center by playing the largest single DJ headlined show had to be my favorite. 2012 has already been a huge year for me, but there's a lot more still to come! I have my headphone range with AKG launching at the end of June, and my new album Club Life Volume Two Miami has just launched. Im really proud how it has turned out! You'll have to wait to see what else I have coming!

When we have listen to your mix CDs in the past, we feel you take us on an electronic music journey. How did you put together the track selection for Club Life Volume Two Miami?
I tried to find tracks that both represented what kind of songs I'm playing in the clubs these days and also songs that epitomize the city of Miami. Miami is a glamorous city with high energy and passion, and I made and picked songs that I felt fit these same aspects of Miami.

Aside from your DJ equipment, name your top three touring essentials please.
My AKG headphones of course, some really good earplugs so I don't go deaf, and some vitamins to help me stay fit and healthy!

What is the weirdest thing that you’ve seen from the DJ booth?
There have been many odd sights over the years, many that you probably wouldn't be able to print. It isn't unusual to have women throw their underwear on stage though! Joking aside, my fans always show a lot of passion for me and my music and I'm really grateful for that.

Do you have any pre gig rituals?
I like to get to the show some time before to hear what the openers are playing and how the crowd is reacting and I definitely like to have some down time to plan my set through a little.

Who in your opinion are the best up-and-coming producers at this moment?
There are so many out there to be honest. At the moment, Tommy Trash is doing awesome things, both as a DJ, personality and producer. I'm hoping to have some time in the studio in the near future to work on a new track.

If you weren’t a DJ/Producer, what would you be doing?
I would be working somewhere in the music or maybe fashion worlds, I love them both too much not to be involved with in some way.

You have already achieved so much in your career, are there still some things that you would still like to achieve?
There's always more I'd like to achieve, like collaborating with some of my favourite artists, or bringing my show to more people than ever.by hkclubbing.com
